تابش جسم سیاه (بلک بادی)

در پایان قرن 19 میلادی ،فیزیک به ظاهر در قله خود بسر می برد. به گونه ای که گزارشاتی در خصوص اظهار نظرهایی نظیر؛

نیز به گوش میرسید. این جملات به استناد مدارک موجود از مجمع بریتانیانی پیشرفت علم در سال 1900 میلادی، به لرد کلوین (1907-1824) نسبت داده می شود. آلبرت مایکلسون (1931-1852) دانشمند آلمانی-آمریکایی هم عقیده ای مشابه آنچه گفته شد داشته است. البته گفته می شود که او این ایده را از کلوین گرفته است اما شواهدی کمی برای اثبات این ادعا در دسترس می باشد.
با ورود به قرن جدید مشخص شد کلوین نگفته بود که فیزیک به اتمام رسیده است. در حقیقت منظور او کاملا مخالف این مطلب بود. دو ابر، فضای آسمان فیزیک قرن 19 را اشغال کرده بود:
زیبایی و وضوح تئوری دینامیک، که گرما و نور را حالتی از حرکت و جابجایی معرفی می کرد، در حال حاضر بوسیله دو ابر در ابهام بسر می برد:

کلوین به تشریح دو سوال، مرتبط با فیزیک زمانه خودش، پرداخت. سوالاتی که از نظر فنی بسیار پیچیده بودند به نحوی که نمی توان آنها را برای شخص عادی توضیح داد مگر اینکه مطالعاتی در خصوص فیزیک داشته باشد. اولی به بحث اتر درخشان که حالا دیگر بی اعتبار شده بود رجوع می کرد؛ و اما دومی عدم تونایی تئوری الکترمغناطیس در پیش بینی صحیح ویژگی های تابش دمایی را تشریح می نمود.
اساسا مبحث اول به این شکل است: نور یک موج است، نور برای انتشار به محیط انتشار نیاز دارد، این محیط به اتر درخشان معروف است، این محیط می باید به شدت سفت و صلب باشد (زیرا نور با سرعت بسیار بالا جابجا می شود) و همچنین به شدت رقیق باشد (زیرا نمی توانیم رد جابجا شدن نور را تشخیص بدهیم). فیزیک قرن 19 نمی توانست جوابی برای این مو ضوعات پیدا کند، بنابراین فیزیک در آن زمان به مخاطره افتاد.

و اما دومین ابر تاریک که بوسیله کلوین مطرح شده بود و کلوین از آن به دکترین ماکسول-بولتزمن یاد می کرد منجر به پیدایش مکانیک کواتنتوم- انقلابی ترین تئوری کل تاریخ فیزیک شد. حقایق اصلی که در این تئوری مطرح می شود این است که در واقع همه چیز بطور همزمان دارای خاصیت موجی و ذره ای است و در عین حال هیچ چیزی نمی تواند بطور قطع و مطلق قابل پیش بینی باشد.
پیدایش این دو تئوری انقلابی فیزیک را به دو قلمرو تقسیم بندی کرد. به تمامی تئوری هایی که پیش از خلق این دو تئوری، بسط و نشر یافته اند فیزیک کلاسیک گفته می شود. همچنین به تمامی تئوری هایی که از اصول اولیه تئوری های نسبیت و مکانیک کوانتوم بهره گرفته اند فیزیک مدرن گفته می شود. واژه مدرن به این دلیل انتخاب شد که پایه و اساس این نظریه ها در سه دهه اول قرن 20 میلادی بنیان گذاشته شد. فن آوری های جدیدی از قبیل نورهای الکتریکی، توسترها، یخچال ها، ماشین های دوخت، رادیو ها، تلفن ها، فیلم ها، دستگاه های ضبط صوت، هواپیماها، اتوموبیل ها، متروها، آسانسورها، آسمان خراش ها، نایلون، سلولوئید و غیره، شروع به پیدایش و موجودیت کردند. اوایل قرن 20 میلادی مملو از ایده ها و اختراعات انقلابی است. اختراعاتی که تصور زندگی بدون آن ها در حال حاضر غیر ممکن است. در حقیقت فیزیک مدرن فقط یک وجه از آغاز مدرنیته می باشد.
